“We Are Not Making Fun of Andy Griffith; I Can’t Emphasize That Enough”

I had to pause the Tivo lastnight after that line in Arrested Development because I knew SarahK and I needed extra time to recover or we’d miss the next part of the show.
I guess the problem with that line – as with a lot of the funniest parts in the episode – required either inside knowledge about the show or having watched many of the previous episodes. Still, I sure hope the show keeps going, because there is nothing funnier on network TV right now.
“More touching!”

  1. It’s definitely a great show (I’ve been watching since it premiered), but I’m worried that they’re getting a little too dependant on narration, and their story-telling is starting to get too convoluted, especially for people who haven’t previously seen the show. It’s my favorite show currently on TV (if you only count current Simpsons seasons, and not the series as a whole), but I’m worried it won’t hold up for many more seasons. I hope I’m wrong, though. This show has easily the best cast on TV since Firefly.
The first season had a similar joke, where Michael’s girlfriend insultingly calls Michael’s son Opie. Ron Howard (who played Opie) then narrates that “Jessie had gone too far, and had best keep her mouth shut.” It wasn’t until a while after I saw the episode that the second implication of the statement was pointed out to me. The show has tons of subtle but brilliant jokes like that.
Season 1, I think, still stands out as the best season.
