If You Plan to Mug People and Break into Homes, then Maybe You Should Choose Another Vacation Spot than Florida

So, now that Florida’s new gun law has come into effect, the Brady Bunch have launched a scare campaign against tourists (yes, the NYTimes had the most balanced article on the subject of those I surveyed). Basically, pamphlets are being handed out in airports that warn people not to get in arguments with locals because they may be shot (could be true if you go to a Cuban area and start arguing how great Castro is… but that was the case before the new law).
What’s funny to me is that the Brady Bunch are also putting ads warning people about Florida in major newspapers for Detroit, Chicago, Boston and London. Riddle me this: If you live in Detroit, Chicago, Boston, or London (where gun ownership is completely banned – except, of course, for the many criminals there), are you more likely to be shot locally or on a vacation to Florida?
I hope people aren’t dumb enough to fall for this, but, if they are, people are going to stay home and get shot in their crime-ridden cities… and it will all be the fault of the Brady Campaign.
(Actually, looking into it, the only one I can’t confirm has a higher murder rate than Florida is London where statistics are hard to come by — Detroit seems to be worst of the lot by far with over 41 murders per 100,000 compared to 5.6 murders for the national average which Florida is in line with)

  1. The whole “Florida shoots tourists” thing is just silly. We don’t shoot them, we abduct them.
You don’t think people actually want to work at Disney, do you? That’s why they have that big underground “retraining” center underneath Epcot.

  2. Last I heard, DC (which has a complete ban on firearms) has the highest gun-crime rate in the nation.
On the same lines, Georgia, which has a concealed carry law and a “fighting words” law (which permits you to thrash a person who insults you unduly), has a citizenry which ranks highly in politeness, even though the populace is demonstrably among the stupidest in the nation. Moral of that story – even an idiot can recognize the value of manners when there is a high probability his fellowman may be packing heat.

  3. Actually, anyone living north of 8 Mile (outside of the actual boundaries of Detroit) has been able to enjoy a very generous CCW law for about 10 years now.
Cities and suburbs north of Detroit have a noticably lower murder rate than the city proper…

  4. I know I felt loads safer in Florida then I do at Detroit Metro Airport. Especially at the now decommissioned Smith terminal. That place had all the inner city “authenticity” that Detroit is famous for.

  5. Here in Kansas there is no CCW law and the crime rate in Kansas City has risen dramatically this year. Also a nice thing about Florida, you can get a CCW Permit without being a resident.

  6. My favorite bumper sticker reads, “An armed society is a polite society.”
It’s been proven that cities/states which allow their populace to carry guns have a LOWER incidence of crime. Imagine that.

  7. My cousins got held up at gunpoint a few years ago while on vacation in Florida.
My parents are moving to Ft. Myers this week! I feel safer knowing the local populace has the right to defend itself.
Esp. since they are moving from Chicago, it is much safer.
The Brady Kidz would be funny if they didn’t get people killed.

  8. I have had to attend annual meetings in one particular city in FL for 10 straight years. Approximately 60% of those times I or some of my colleagues was the victim of a crime.
I am now much less concerned about going back for the next one.
Good job FL, wish all states would follow suit.
