The best-selling authors of all time are William Shakespeare, with over 4 billion sold, followed closely by Agatha Christie, who also has around 4 billion editions sold. With numbers like that, it’s obvious that good fiction attracts large followings. Which brings us to our question today:

not to argue with success but I have to wonder how many of those Shakespeare books are ever opened versus displayed.

Purchased under duress…required reading
David Drake
Either Isaac Asimov or that guy who writes the Newsish Fakery posts.
Yes, Asimov, in that Genre, and Niven, Zelazny, Philip Jose Farmer, and Piers Anthony…
If you want something done right!
Tom Clancy.
The man could write a techno thriller.
He left us far too soon.
…Tom Clancy et al.
Tolkien
I like
David Weber
John Ringo
David Drake
S.M. Stirling
Terry Pratchett
Jack Chalker
and a lot of others. I like Shakespeare but prefer film adaptations or staged plays rather than reading.
Finally, isn’t “God” the most read author in reality or does the “Fiction” tag not apply? 🙂
I forgot Eric Flint.
Neal Stephenson!
Also, Ray Bradbury, Terry Pratchett, and Graham Greene.
It has changed over the years but I always enjoy Michael Connelly and his Harry Bosch series. The Lincoln Lawyer books are fine also. Lee Child has never disappointed me, or Jo Nesbo either.
All fiction or is this limited to fantasy fiction?
All it says is “fiction” so fiction. Any fiction. Although I suppose most of those options listed in the question were not general fiction, they do appear at the top of living bestsellers. But I say all fiction.
Heinlein is one of my all time favorites.
Of the ones on the list, I’ve only read Frank J and JK Rowling. And FrankJ is definitely better.
I’ve only read Frank J. and Stephen King (and I’m not a fan of him), of those listed, so I can relate.
Dean Koontz, Tony Hillerman, Jessica Fletcher, Kilgore Trout.
If you’re a fan of Frank J’s humor writing, you should check out the audio book of “The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent”. It’s written by Larry Correia and read by Adam Baldwin.
