Gen Z Believes They Shouldn’t Need a Skillset to Get a Job, Just a Winning Personality

Corporate workers are discovering whether or not they’re “personality hires” as the term has gained steam on social media in recent weeks.

Bella Rose Mortel, a 22-year-old social media strategist at newsletter platform Beehiiv, went viral this week labeling herself a personality hire, and suggesting that other Gen Zers might embrace a more “playful” attitude at work.

The term “personality hire” refers to an employee beloved for bringing a positive attitude and seamless interpersonal skills to the office — usually to compensate for a lack of hard skills or productivity.

  1. I blame the sitcom “Friends” for the current state of entitlement in our nation. People, young and old alike, think that you can have a life where you devote a couple of hours a week to your job, but are paid enough money to live in Greenwich Village and sit around a coffee shop with your friends. Despite your lack of skills and any semblance of a work ethic, you are promoted at work, able to open successful businesses, and land lucrative jobs better than the ones you’re currently ignoring. And it never cuts into your social life.

I deserve it. I deserve yours. I deserve it all.

  2. Productivity is a dying vestige of the old White-Privileged business model. There is a new paradigm that promotes endless fun, and freedom to express distain for all archaic ideals. It wouldn’t do much for the bottom line, though…

  3. My role today will be played by computers and AI. No more plumbers, electricians, ditch diggers, mechanics etc etc…
We have people at the top that watched too many episodes of The Jetsons and are now regularly smoking dope..
